Dry needling is an advanced and powerful treatment technique used by licensed physical therapists to reduce pain, restore mobility, and accelerate healing. By inserting thin, monofilament needles directly into dysfunctional muscle tissue we can release tension, improve muscle function, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and support your body’s natural healing processes.
At Revive Physiotherapy, we go above and beyond traditional trigger point dry needling. To enhance the effectiveness and minimize post treatment soreness, we add electrical stimulation. The electrical signals create a light contraction of the muscles which helps to decrease pain, reduce tension, enhance blood flow, and promote cellular repair.
While both techniques use similar needles, they vary in philosophies, training, and clinical goals. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on restoring energy flow along meridians. In contrast, dry needling is a Western medical technique grounded in anatomy and neuroscience. It specifically targets neuro-musculoskeletal system to improve performance and reduce pain.
Overworked or injured muscles can develop painful knots known as myofascial trigger points. Dry needling helps release these knots, restoring normal muscle length and reducing soreness and tightness.
When muscles become inactive due to pain or injury, dry needling can help re-engage them by stimulating nerve pathways and restoring proper muscle activation patterns.
Dry needling can help desensitize irritated nerves and improve blood flow to painful areas, reducing both acute and chronic pain conditions including back pain, neck pain, and headaches.
The insertion of the needle creates tiny, controlled lesions in dysfunctional or injured tissue. This microtrauma signals the body to initiate a repair response which bringing in oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells essential for tissue repair. Dry needling stimulates satellite cells and fibroblasts, both of which are key players in muscle and soft tissue regeneration.
In chronic injuries or post-surgical areas, dry needling can disrupt scar tissue, improving tissue pliability, range of motion, and function.
Dry needling increases blood flow, decreases muscular tightness, and helps calm the sympathetic nervous system, all which help move excess fluid out of swollen areas more efficiently via the lymphatic and venous system. Adding E-stim causes rhythmic, low-level muscle contractions, which further helps push lymphatic fluid and venous blood back toward the heart, reducing swelling.
