DryNeedling.
A precise, evidence-based technique to release tight muscles, calm pain, and restore movement — built into your recovery plan from day one.
What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses thin, solid monofilament needles — called "dry" because they carry no medication — to penetrate the skin and target myofascial trigger points within the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.
When a needle contacts a taut band of muscle, it triggers a localized twitch response that resets the muscle's chemistry, reduces pain signals, and restores blood flow to the area. The result: faster release of tight tissue, reduced pain, and improved movement quality.
For cases requiring deeper relief, your clinician may add electrical stimulation (e-stim) through the needles — gently stimulating the muscle to enhance the therapeutic effect and accelerate recovery.
Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture
They both use needles — but that's where the similarity ends. Understanding the difference helps you make a confident, informed choice about your care.
Western Musculoskeletal
Medicine
- Rooted in anatomy, physiology, and modern evidence-based practice
- Targets specific myofascial trigger points — tight, irritable knots in muscle tissue
- Goal: reduce muscle tension, decrease pain, and restore movement function
- Performed by licensed physical therapists with specialized post-graduate training
- Commonly combined with manual therapy, exercise, and e-stim for a comprehensive plan
Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM)
- Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and over 2,000 years of practice
- Targets specific acupoints along energy meridians (called qi pathways)
- Goal: balance the body's energy flow to promote overall health and well-being
- Performed by licensed acupuncturists with training in TCM theory
- Addresses a broad spectrum of conditions, including stress, digestion, and systemic health
At Revive, dry needling is always delivered as part of a comprehensive, movement-focused treatment plan — never in isolation.
Conditions We Treat With Dry Needling
Dry needling is effective across a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions — from everyday stiffness to chronic sports injuries.
What to Expect
Every dry needling session at Revive follows a clear, clinician-led process designed to keep you informed, comfortable, and progressing.
Thorough Evaluation
Your clinician reviews your history, assesses your movement patterns, and identifies the specific muscle groups and trigger points contributing to your pain. No guessing — just a precise clinical picture.
Precise Treatment
Thin monofilament needles are placed into the identified trigger points. When indicated, gentle electrical stimulation is added through the needles to amplify muscle relaxation and deepen the therapeutic response.
Reinforce the Results
After needling, your clinician guides you through targeted movement and self-care strategies to extend the relief, rebuild tissue resilience, and prevent the trigger points from returning.
Have Questions? We Have Answers.
Dry needling is safe, effective, and well-tolerated — here's what patients ask us most.
Most patients feel a brief, deep aching or muscle twitch sensation when the needle reaches the trigger point — this is actually a sign the treatment is working. The needles are very thin (much finer than hypodermic injection needles), so the insertion itself is typically mild. Any soreness afterward is similar to the feeling after a tough workout and usually resolves within 24–48 hours. We'll communicate throughout your session to ensure your comfort.
Yes. When performed by a trained clinician, dry needling is a safe and well-researched treatment. At Revive, all clinicians who perform dry needling hold post-graduate certification in the technique. We use single-use, sterile needles for every session — they are never reused. We screen all patients for contraindications (such as blood thinners, local skin conditions, or pregnancy) before treatment to ensure it's appropriate for you.
Many patients notice significant relief within 2–3 sessions, though the total number depends on how long you've had the condition, the number of trigger points involved, and how your body responds. Dry needling is most effective as part of a broader physical therapy plan that also includes manual therapy and targeted exercise — this combination tends to produce faster, longer-lasting results than needling alone. Your clinician will give you a realistic expectation at your first visit.
